Our Clients in Social Economy & Infrastructure

St. John’s Institute

St. John’s Institute (SJI) is a community-based charitable organization rooted in a legacy of providing affordable housing and cultural support. While originally founded to serve Ukrainian students attending the University of Alberta, SJI has since evolved into a broader catalyst for inclusive community development in Edmonton.

SJI operates a mixed model of affordable housing, food services, and cultural programming. Its residence, primarily home to students, is supported through provincial subsidies to ensure affordability. Alongside housing, SJI provides on-site food services, including a growing catering business, and offers space for cultural organizations and community gatherings.

Guided by a community-first approach, SJI works to address social isolation and build stronger connections among diverse populations. Its programs reflect a holistic approach to well-being, addressing the needs of body, mind, and spirit.

As it grows, the organization continues to refine its operations and expand its reach, with an emphasis on sustainability, partnership, and shared resources as a path toward long-term impact.
