SAGE

The Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE) is a multi-service senior center with a mission to enhance the quality of life of older persons through service, innovation, advocacy and volunteerism.

In 2007, SAGE recognized there was an opportunty to connect older workers to willing employers.  They decided to explore possible options and, if one fit, to prepare a business plan.  To move this iniative forward, SAGE developed a work plan, identified a reputable and skilled consultant, and approached the SEF.  In response, we provided a Path to Loan Grant to support the work.

It is expected that the plan will be complete in 2008.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Edmonton (BBBS)

For many years BBBS has operated a “Dream Home” lottery.  The net profit from the lottery is invested into BBBS programming.  To successfully manage the lottery requires considerable business skills.  The lottery, is, by definition, a social enterprise.

One factor, among many, that is critical to the success of the lottery, is access to appropriate building sites.  To secure the site for the 2009 lottery, BBBS applied to the SEF for funds to acquire a site.  The SEF responded by lending funds for a 1 year term to finance the purchase.

In Kind

In Kind, a social enterprise of the United Way of Alberta Capital Region, is in the process of preparing a new business plan.  At certain moments during the process, and very much on an informal basis, they ED drops by to discuss her ideas and progress.  SEF staff engage offering ideas and, when appropriate, offering to make connections.
